Integral History

The history of West Virginia is integral to the forming of the United States as we know it. West Virginia broke off from Virginia as a result of the Civil War in 1863. This new 35th state became known for its mineral resources such as limestone and bituminous coal. Coal became a key fuel source for much of the industrial revolution in the U.S. and powered steamships for much of the world.

There are also notable archeological findings in the 18th century. Within the Haynes Cave, saltpeter miners discovered large animal bones within the cave. They were sent to Thomas Jefferson himself and the bones were determined to be that of a 3 toed sloth. The bones later became known as Jefferson’s three-toed sloth and became the official state fossil in 2008.

West Virginia Community

Across West Virginia, there is a sense of comradery and togetherness. You don’t have to be from here to recognize the unique community aspect of this magnificent state. From Shepherdstown overlooking the Potomac River to quaint Charles Town filled with friendly locals, you will love the sense of hospitality and gorgeous scenery in West Virginia.

Recent Growth

Cities in West Virginia show varying types of growth. While Berkeley showed 37.2% growth from 2000-2010 Shepherdstown has shown a 110% increase from 2000-2010. Both have seen a steady increase over time. The closer to major cities a town resides the more in demand things like shops, activities, and homes will become. Each city is growing more each day while still maintaining beautiful forests and parks for people to enjoy.
